the very moment Frederic Auguste Bartholdi's statue of "Liberty Enlightening the
World" was being erected on Bedloe's Island in New York harbor in 1885,
people have been captivated by her image. The island, which has been her home
for more than 120 years, was officially renamed Liberty Island in 1956. Today
this imposing work of art continues to capture the imagination of all who see
her, whether in person or as the subject of countless photographs or artistic
renderings.
The Statue of Liberty is quite
possibly the most photographed statue or monument anywhere in the world.
As an ageless symbol of American freedom, she has stood silent watch through
the Golden Age of American Immigration and welcomed tens-of-millions of
passengers en route to a new life in America.
